While the Amalfi Coast is considered one of the most beautiful vacation destinations in the world, it's also considered one of the most expensive. From Michelin-star cliffside restaurants and private boat tours along the coast to exclusive beach clubs and accommodations known to host A-list celebrities, it's no surprise that visiting the Amalfi Coast can get a little pricey. But guess what? A little advice from an experienced visitor (like me) along with a little planning can go a LONG way in saving some money. It's for that reason that I've spent some time composing a list of the cheapest towns to stay in when visiting the Amalfi Coast, along with a rating based on that town, and a list of quality hotels, Airbnbs, and hostels you can choose from. Oh, and I gave you a liiiiittle insight into how I planned my trip to the Amalfi Coast so that you can learn from my experience too!
The towns above, ordered in no particular order, showcase some of the more affordable accommodation options for visitors looking to stay on the Amalfi Coast. You'll notice that most of the towns are further away from Positano, the most famous and expensive town to stay in on the Amalfi Coast. Here is a list of the locations as well, with a little description and rating for each to stay in:
Praiano (10/10): This town gets a rating of a 10, which I can personally give since I stayed here for a week on the Amalfi Coast. Praiano is a great balance between affordability and accessibility to popular spots like Positano. It has beautiful views and a quieter atmosphere, making it the best choice for an overall stay on the Amalfi Coast.
Maiori (8/10): Maiori features one of the longest beaches on the Amalfi Coast, with a variety of budget-friendly hotels and a family-friendly environment. The only issue is that its modern appearance and larger size can sometimes detract from the quaint coastal charm that many travelers seek, and can make it more crowded during peak season.
Minori (7/10): Minori, located right next to Maiori, is quieter and more relaxed, offering a charming, small-town feel with less tourist traffic and good access to local cuisine. The only reason this one got a 7/10 is because its smaller size means fewer amenities and activities compared to larger towns.
Atrani (6/10): Atrani is one of the smallest and most charming villages, close to Amalfi, providing a peaceful stay with easy access to larger towns. However, its very small size means limited accommodation options and amenities. There aren't many dining options or shops, and the nightlife is very limited.
Nocelle (5/10): Nocelle provides stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere, with more affordable accommodations than Positano. However, its remote location and accessibility issues, including a reliance on steep stairs, make it less convenient for some travelers.
Agerola (4/10): Agerola is ideal for hiking enthusiasts with trails like the Path of the Gods nearby, offering more affordable accommodations. However, its distance from the coast and limited public transport options make it less appealing for those wanting direct beach access. There is a lack of coastal views and there are cooler temperatures/more rain compared to towns directly on the coast.
Conca dei Marini (3/10): Conca dei Marini is a quieter option with beautiful scenery, but it has fewer amenities and attractions compared to larger towns. Its remote location can also make travel to other parts of the coast more challenging.
Cetara (2/10): Cetara is known for its fishing traditions and anchovies, offering a very authentic experience. However, it has fewer accommodation options and amenities, and is less well-known among tourists since there's not much to do.
Scala (1/10): Scala is the oldest town on the Amalfi Coast, offering historical charm and budget-friendly stays. Unfortunately, it's one of the lowest rated in comparison to others though due it its distance from the coast and lack of tourist infrastructure. If you want the traditional Amalfi Coast experience, this is probably not the place to stay unless your ok with taking transportation for about an hour to places like Positano.
Tramonti (1/10): Tramonti is located inland, great for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience. However, it lacks the coastal charm, convenience, and amenities of other towns on this list, making it less suitable for typical Amalfi Coast vacations.
Looking for an affordable but nice place to stay on the Amalfi Coast? Don't worry, I've got you. Below I've composed a list of some of the cheapest Airbnbs in the best towns to stay in along the coast. While there are towns that are even more affordable than the ones I chose, I tried to stick with towns that are both cheaper but also have nice Airbnbs, good restaurants, and awesome views!
Blumavy House located in Praiano, Italy is one of the most loved homes on Airbnb, sitting in the top 5% of homes based on its 250+ great reviews, ratings, and reliability. It's only about $250 to $330 a night (depending on what time of year you stay) after all the fees are said and done, and it can accommodate 5 guests with its 3 bedrooms, 5 beds, and 2 bathrooms. The only thing to keep in mind is that this Airbnb does have a 5-night minimum.
Casa Prinicipessa is a home in Praiano, Italy that can accommodate up to 4 guests with its 2 bedrooms, 3 beds, and 2 bathrooms. It is a guest favorite, with over 120 great reviews and an average 4.89 star rating. It also boasts that 90% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating, and it has stunning views. It does have a 3 night minimum and costs approximately $280-$320 after cleaning fees and taxes (depending on the time of year you choose to stay).
Angelina's apartment Airbnb is located directly on the Spiaggia di Maiori with 3 bedrooms and 5 beds that can accommodate a whopping 8 guests! It has an excellent rating as far as location goes, and costs between $175 to $250 a night, which is incredible for an Airbnb that can accommodate so many people.
Maison Jolie Apartment Airbnb is a one bedroom that has 2 beds, 1 bathroom, and can accommodate 4 guests. Only 50 meters from the Spiaggia di Maiori, this Airbnb's main selling propositions are its close proximity to the beautiful beach, its cleanliness, and its 5 star location. The accommodation is said to be very quiet despite being in the center, with shops, bars, supermarkets and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, as well as a bus stop 100 meters away. Costing around $200 a night after fees (depending on the time of year you choose to visit), this is a good Airbnb with a great price for a small family or group of friends.
If you're not an Airbnb fan and typically opt for a nice hotel to stay in when you're on vacation, you're not alone. Hotels are great because you don't have to clean as much when you leave, and you get the added luxury of being taken care of by staff. Sometimes you even get free breakfast! So for those of your who would rather stay in a hotel on the Amalfi Coast, here is a list of some affordable hotels:
Hotel Le Fioriere is a 3-star hotel located in Praiano known for its rooftop terrace, free daily breakfast, and being only 550 feet from Gavitella beach! Rooms start at around $230 a night and can increase up to $400 a night depending on the day of the week and time of the year. This property also features free wifi and air conditioning, making it the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring or enjoying the sun and the sand.
Hotel Pellegrino is a stunning hotel nestled on the coast of Praiano that's covered in climbing ivy and vibrant purple flowers. This hotel is known for serving breakfast and dinner on the panoramic terrace of the hotel's restaurant, and they have both free parking and air conditioning. They also can provide guests with transfers to the nearest beach or even to towns like Positano!
Hotel Club 2 Torri is a STUNNING 4-star hotel with a pool that overlooks the rest of the Amalfi Coast and the Mediterranean Sea. While price usually fluctuates between $300 to $500 a night, there are plenty of days where it goes to $200 or even lower as well. With a variety of different suites and experiences, this is the perfect hotel to make your Amalfi Coast vacation dreams come true.
Hotel Villa Pandora is another gorgeous 4-star hotel in Maiori with one of the most unique panoramic pools I've seen on the Amalfi Coast. This is because the pool is surrounded by a royal blue tile and located directly on the cliffside, overlooking the water and the rest of the coast. It's magical! This property also features $200-$300 a night rooms with blue bedding and different styles of tile that scream classic European vacation. If you're looking to enjoy some extra amenities on your trip without breaking the bank, this is one place I would personally recommend to stay at!
One of the best ways to travel for a decent price and to make friends is by staying in a hostel! Fortunately for you hostel-lovers, the Amalfi Coast has plenty of decently priced hostels to stay in. From Positano to Amalfi, here are the best hostels for visitors:
Brikette Hostel: Located in Positano, Brikette Hostel offers stunning views of the coast and a friendly atmosphere, making it a favorite among travelers. It's conveniently situated close to major attractions and provides a social environment perfect for meeting fellow travelers. The average price per night is around €40.
A Scalinatella Hostel: Situated in the village of Atrani, A Scalinatella Hostel boasts a central location just steps from the beach and local restaurants. The historic building adds character to your stay, and guests appreciate its cozy ambiance and helpful staff. Nightly rates usually start at €30 but can fluctuate depending on the time of year.
Seven Hostel: Located in Sant'Agnello, near Sorrento, Seven Hostel features modern facilities and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views. It's close to Sorrento, making it an excellent base for exploring the Amalfi Coast. Nightly rates are approximately €35.
The Amalfi Coast is known for breathtaking coastal views, beautiful beaches, restaurants with high quality cuisine, and much, much more. With this in mind, you need a minimum of 4 days on the Amalfi Coast if you're looking to see the highlights during a short period of time. That would give you enough time to travel down to Amalfi by train and/or private car, and to then visit main attractions like Positano, Amalfi, etc. If you are looking to have a more relaxed visit and to see both some of the famous towns and attractions while visiting some locally recommended spots, I would advise visiting for between 7-10 days. I stayed for 7 days and for my group that was enough time to enjoy local beaches and areas, take a boat ride across the coast, visit Positano and Sorrento, and eat at a TON of amazing restaurants.
The answer to this question depends on your preferences. If you love the beach and want to stay closer to the main tourist attractions/towns like Positano, Amalfi, etc then it would be better to stay on the Amalfi Coast. However, this can be more expensive in comparison to staying in Sorrento, a city which is more affordable but also less scenic and quaint, more touristy. Ultimately, your choice will depend on whether you prioritize cost savings or a more picturesque and serene environment.
It's generally cheaper to stay in the town of Amalfi compared to Positano. Amalfi provides more budget-friendly options without sacrificing the beauty and charm of the Amalfi Coast, with affordable shops, restaurants, and more. Positano, on the other hand, has a reputation for being a town full of luxury hotels and high-end vacation rentals with upscale dining options and just an overall wealthier clientele. This makes Positano ideal for those seeking a luxurious experience, while Amalfi is perfect for travelers looking for a more affordable way to stay on the Amalfi Coast.
When planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast, my friend group and I knew that we wanted to visit Positano for a day, go on a boat ride, and that we wanted to stay close to Positano without having to pay for a costly hotel. That's how we can upon Praiano. Praiano is a cute little town located directly between Positano and Amalfi. It has its own local beach, and two beach clubs, so it felt like the perfect place to stay.
After deciding on the town we were going to stay in, we found the Vista Vettica Airbnb, with outstanding views of the Amalfi Coast. When we arrived at this Airbnb, we loved it! The only catch was, we didn't realize it was at the very top of Praiano so we ended up doing a lot of walking. Because of that, my advice would be to make sure there's a good local bus system in the town you're staying in. Thankfully, Praiano does have many bus stops across the town, so we were able to take the bus and only walked when we didn't want to wait. We also loved the beach at the bottom of the town, the restaurants, and OneFire Beach Club. Overall I would definitely recommend staying here, especially if you want the Amalfi Coast experience and to visit tourist towns nearby without breaking the bank.
