It can be tough to determine how many days you need at a certain destination without actually GOING to that destination. Oftentimes, you may feel like you should've stayed longer because you felt like there was still lots of things to see, and other times you may have felt like you stayed for too long and were wasting time and money. Fortunately for you, I've been to the Amalfi Coast and stayed for quite a bit so I'd be more than happy to share with you what I've learned and what the consensus is from all visitors who have been to Italy.
I would personally recommend staying 5 to 7 days on the Amalfi Coast. This is because that duration would allow you to explore popular places like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, while also taking time to visit smaller towns like Praiano if you really wanted to. If you don't want to visit too many of the smaller towns, then the time would allow for some extra rest days in between seeing each town so that you could enjoy the local beaches. That's what my friend group did and we felt one week was the perfect amount of time to visit Positano, Amalfi, and Sorrento but to also enjoy the town our accommodation was in which was Praiano. We were able to have about 3 full beach days where we explored the town, laid at different beach clubs for a few hours, and swam in the Mediterranean. If I went back, I would do it the same way again.
The answer to this question depends on what type of vacation you want this to be, how many towns you want to visit, and what town you'll be staying in. Many visitors coming to the Amalfi Coast each year feel like they have to visit Positano and maybe one additional town like Amalfi, Ravello, or Sorrento. If you don't mind staying busy the entire 3 days, then this might be enough time as long as you arrive early on the Amalfi Coast and are willing to have early mornings and late nights. However, I would not advise planning only 3 days on the coast unless its absolutely necessary. I think you will feel like you have to come back at some point to enjoy even more of it!
Yes, five days on the Amalfi Coast is just enough time to see the main highlights of the Amalfi Coast. With a well-planned itinerary, you can explore major hot spots like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello while still being able to enjoy some relaxing time on the Mediterranean beaches. You will also likely have time to fit in activities like hiking the Path of the Gods and taking a boat trip to Capri, which are both amazing experiences I would recommend. While you won't see everything, 5 days provides a good balance between sightseeing and relaxation.
I personally stayed for one week on the Amalfi Coast and I felt like this was the perfect amount of time to visit. Within that week, my friend group and I were able to explore Praiano (the town we were staying in) and visit their local beach three times, eat at countless restaurants that we all wanted to try, relax at two beach clubs, spend a day on a private boat tour, and visit Positano, Amalfi, and Sorrento. Now, keep in mind that this was a lot we wanted to accomplish so if you don't want to do everything on that list and have less things to check off, then 5 days may be more suitable. If you feel like you have the time and the budget to really immerse yourself in the Amalfi Coast, then do a week.
Confused on which towns are must-see towns on the Amalfi Coast? If so, don't worry- I've got you! Below is a list I've composed of all of the top towns that tourists enjoy seeing when they visit the Amalfi Coast, as well as a short description of what you can expect each town to be like. I'm hoping this will help you narrow down to a few places you want to see and expedite your planning process:
Positano. Positano is one of the most famous towns in the Amalfi Coast, attracting over 12,000 visitors daily between April to October. Odds are, when you go to this town, it will be packed with tourists. While that might sound horrible, there's a reason this town is so famous. With stunning cliffside views, colorful buildings, luxury shopping, and fine dining it truly is a town that you have to experience atleast once in your life. If you have the time, I would advise coming here early and staying late so that you can visit the beach for a little while to swim, shop, and have a sunset dinner. Just make sure to make reservatioms in advance!
Amalfi. This town is home to the famous cathedral, Duomo di Sant'Andrea. It's also dotted with charming little piazzas full of cute shops and restaurants, so there's plenty to explore. My friend group and I took a boat tour from Amalfi, so we arrived early to have breakfast and do some shopping and then we went on an 8 hour boat ride through the coast. 10/10 would recommend, this was one day I won't forget for the rest of my life.
Ravello. Ravello is a town that's higher up on the coast, located just above Marmorata. This town is famous for breathtaking gardens, such as Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, which offer spectacular views of the coastline. Ravello also hosts many music artists and is known as the "City of Music". This is a super small and cute town that you would probably only need a single day in.
Atrani. Atrani is one of the smallest and most picturesque villages on the Amalfi Coast, famous for its narrow streets, charming squares, and beautiful beaches. Its very close to the famous town of Amalfi which makes it an ideal spot for those seeking a more quieter experience. Many say that Atrani is "one of the Amalfi Coast's best kept secrets" since it's not jam packed with tourists yet.
Maiori. This town is home to the largest beach on the Amalfi Coast called Spiaggia di Maiori. It’s also considered to be a family-friendly destination and it has a wide promenade filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes. Great spot to visit for a day or to stay in when on the Amalfi Coast!
Sorrento. While some call Sorrento the first part of the Amalfi Coast and some argue it's not on the coast, I like to include it because I do believe it's a nice place to visit-especially if you're interested in the lemons the Amalfi Coast is known for! We had a great limoncello tour here at an organic lemon farm that I would highly recommend, and we had a case of limoncello shipped back home as gifts for family members. They loved it!
Praiano. Praiano will also have a special place in my heart. While this town does not get a ridiculous amount of tourists like its neighboring town Amalfi, it has a gorgeous local beach at the bottom of town with multiple OUTSTANDING restaurants (I can say that, I tried them all ;)). They also have two famous beach clubs as well, OneFire Beach Club and Il Pirata, and visiting those were some of my best memories from the trip.
While Positano can be done in a single day if you're staying in a nearby area, it's advised to spend 2-3 days exploring this famous town. That's because only multiple days would allow you to spend a couple hours at the beach, eat at various restaurants, shop, etc. My friend group and I personally spent two days in Positano. The first day we went on a boat ride from Amalfi to Positano where we spent a couple hours exploring and then the rest of the day swam at swim spots up and down the coast. The second day we went for the actual entire day, arriving early to spent the morning and early afternoon at a beach club and then we walked to the top of Positano to shop and have a sunset dinner and after dinner drinks. It was perfect!
The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is either April to late June or end of August to mid October. This is because the crowds are smaller, prices are a little better, and the weather is warm and beautiful. July and August are the most crowded months of the tourist season and also the hottest months of the year. You can also opt to visit anytime between November and March with prices definitely being the lowest during this time, but many businesses will likely be closed. My friend group and I went in mid August so while there were a few businesses closed for the holiday Ferragosto we found that the weather was super nice for swimming but everything was definitely very crowded and prices surged.
