The Amalfi Coast is one the most famous, desirable, and expensive travel destinations in the world. With over 5 million visitors arriving per year to experience the outstanding Italian food, swim in the Mediterranean sea, and visit Positano, it's no surprise that costs can add up quickly. Fortunately for you though, not every town or visit on the Amalfi Coast is created equal. To learn more about what to expect in terms of expenses, which places are more expensive than others, and what your budget should be, read on.
Yes, the Amalfi Coast is generally considered an expensive travel destination. This is simply because the region is known for its luxury hotels, high-end dining, and exclusive beach clubs, all of which are factors that can affect the overall cost of a trip. However, expenses can definitely vary depending on the time of year you visit, the town and accommodation you choose to stay in, where you eat, and what extra activities you decide to do. Positano and Ravello are two of the most prestigious towns to stay in, known for their opulence. Most of the other towns on the Amalfi Coast go down in price from there.
The cost of staying on the Amalfi Coast depends on a variety of factors, including but not limited to which town you choose to stay in, the type of accommodation, number of people, time of year you visit, etc. Generally speaking though it is approximately $355 to $700 a night to stay in a hotel in Positano, the most expensive town you can stay in. From there, prices usually go down. Amalfi is the second most expensive town to stay in, and then towns like Praiano, Maiori, and Minori are next. The further you get away from Positano or being on the beach, the cheaper the accommodations are, decreasing to only $100-$250 per night.
Yes, eating on the Amalfi Coast can be expensive, especially in popular towns like Positano and Amalfi. Fine dining restaurants, especially those with sea views, can be quite costly. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect when dining out on the Amalfi Coast:
Fine Dining: Expect to pay €50-€100 or more per person for a meal at a high-end restaurant.
Mid-Range Restaurants: At mid-range restaurants, a three-course meal for two people typically costs around €30-€60 per person.
Casual Dining: Pizzerias, trattorias, and casual cafes are more affordable, with meals costing between €15-€30 per person. These are great spots that you can ask the locals about!
Street Food and Markets: For the most budget-friendly options, consider street food or local markets. You can find snacks, sandwiches, and other quick bites for €5-€10.
Transportation on the Amalfi Coast can be quite affordable if you're willing to take SITA buses to your destinations. Considering the fact that bus rides only cost €1.50 to €2.50 per ride and SITA buses run between major towns such as Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and Maiori all day, this is the perfect method of affordable transportation. For those looking for a little more convenience and comfort (and air conditioning), you can also rent a car for as little as $25 a day, call a taxi company or private driving service, rent a scooter, or take a ferry. Just remember that prices fluctuate for both rentals and daily rides depending on the season and demand.
Based on the most recent statistics, a week long vacation on the Amalfi Coast will cost an individual an average of about $1500 including flights, accommodation, and food. This does not take into account any extra activities, which means that if you're looking to include visiting a beach club, taking a boat ride, or anything else like that then the price for a week will be looking more like $2000 for one person. This price can fluctuate depending on the time of year you visit, how long you stay, and what type of accommodation you stay in.
The cheapest time of year to visit the Amalfi Coast is during the off season when the weather isn't as warm and there aren't many tourists, which is typically from November to March. The only caveat is that many popular restaurants and even hotels shut down during this time of the year, which means that you won't have as much to do as you would during tourist season. If you want to visit the Amalfi Coast while saving money and still experiencing it at peak beauty, I would recommend traveling at the end of April, in May, September, or October. Tourist season is either just beginning or just coming to a close, but weather is still decently warm at 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) and everything is still open!
I would personally recommend having a budget of about $2000-$2500 per person including flights, accommodation, and extra activities for a week on the Amalfi Coast. Even though I spent significantly less on my trip to the Amalfi Coast (you can learn more about how I saved a TON of money on my trip by clicking here), flights alone can cost anywhere $800 and up and hotels are usually around $250 and up per night. Keep in mind that additional expenses for food, transportation, and activities can add up quickly, so it's always good to plan for some extra spending. It is DEFINITELY possible to do it for cheaper though!
