If you've traveled to the Amalfi Coast before July of 2024, then you know how hard it is to get down there. With countless transfers from planes to buses, trains, and private transfers, getting from Rome's famous Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport to destinations like Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi was a headache in itself. But guess what? NOT ANYMORE! Italy announced a majorrrr announcement recently that will change the way that tourists get to the Amalfi Coast for the forseeable future- and I'm here to tell you all about it. Have you guess it yet? Yep, that's right- the Amalfi Coast is getting it's own airport in Salerno (which, ok, is technically not in the Amalfi Coast, but it's close enough, trust me).

DOES THE AMALFI COAST HAVE AN AIRPORT?

Before the announcement that the Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport was opening to tourists in July of 2024, the Naples-Capodichino International Airport was considered the closest to the Amalfi Coast. While both Naples' airport and the new airport in Salerno are not technically considered to be on the Amalfi Coast, they are very close to coastal towns like Vietri sul Mare (the last town on the Amalfi Coast), and the Sorrentine Peninsula. So essentially yes, the Amalfi Coast has an airport very close to it; it's just not located in any of the popular tourist towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Praiano because the terrain and environmental regulations make building an airport there impractical and environmentally unsound.

WHAT'S A FACT ABOUT THE SALERNO COSTA D'AMALFI AIRPORT?

One little known fact about the Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is that this airport is not brand new. In fact, it was built back in 1944 as a military airfield during World War II. As the years went on it was transformed into a flying school, firefighting center, and private airfield. Now, in July of 2024, it is becoming accessible to the public to help make the Amalfi Coast more accessible for visitors.

WHERE IS the Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport LOCATED?

The Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is located in a town known as Pontecagnano Faiano in the province of Salerno. The exact address is Via Olmo, snc, 84092 Bellizzi SA, Italy. It is only a mere 12 kilometers (or 7.5 miles) from Salerno's town center, and its located directly across from the manufacturer Azienda Agricola Piscitiello.

WHEN does THE Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport open?

The Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is set to officially open on July 11, 2024. The first flights will be operated by the Spanish airline Volotea, coming from Cagliari, Italy (CAG), and Nantes, France (NTE). Easyjet is another famous airline company that will be opening up flights to this destination, with international flights from Basel/Mulhouse, Berlin, Geneva, Milan, and London. There will also be domestic flights available through Volotea and Ryanair to destinations like Bergamo, Turin, Catania, and Verona.

SALERNO COSTA D'AMALFI AIRPORT parking & transportation

Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, though brand new and small in scale, offers some parking and transportation services. 150 parking spots are currently available for free parking directly in front of the building and the sole terminal, facilitating easy access for travelers. While the airport plans to expand these facilities in the coming years, it already provides several bus lines for public transportation. These buses connect the airport to Salerno's city center and other nearby towns, including various stops along the Amalfi Coast.

What Facilities Are Available at Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport?

Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, though very small, is equipped with all the essentials you need for an easy flying experience. The airport has four check-in desks, two boarding areas, and luggage carousels. Additional amenities include a VIP Lounge for added comfort, an ATM, and food and drink vending machines. There are no restaurants yet because of its small size. However, plans are in place to construct a new passenger terminal by 2026 or 2027, with further developments expected to continue until at least 2043, indicating that more facilities and amenities will likely be added in the future.

What airport is closer to the amalfi coast: naples or amalfi?

When considering which airport is closer to the Amalfi Coast, the winner depends on your destination in the Amalfi Coast. Naples International Airport is located on the western side of the Amalfi Coast, while the smaller Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is closer to the eastern coastal towns.  If your travel plans include visiting places like Positano, Amalfi, or Ravello, Naples Airport might be your best bet due to its broader range of flights and accessibility. However, if you're aiming to explore areas closer to Salerno or the eastern end of the coast, such as Vietri sul Mare, the Salerno airport provides a more direct and possibly quicker option. It's also important to keep in mind that the Salerno airport is new with only a few domestic and international flights, while the Naples airport has a lot more flying options.
