Affordable Transportation Options in Bali: Uber, Lyft, Scooters & More

Getting around bali & other areas with uber

If you're looking to learn about popular transportation methods in Bali and how you can get from Point A to Point B both quickly and affordably, you've come to the right place. My name is Rachael, aka The Traveling Twin, and I spent two weeks exploring Bali while taking scooters, private cars, buses, and more- and I'm here to tell you all about it! If you're planning a trip to Bali and you want to prepare for how you're going to be getting to each specific place you're visiting, read the article below.

DOES BALI HAVE UBER?

Unfortunately, Uber no longer operates in Bali. While this popular ridesharing app was a method of transportation in Bali from 2015 to 2018, it ended up being discontinued as a service because of competition from other ridesharing services like Gojek and Grab. This means that both locals and visitors must rely on other forms of transportation, including local transportation, scooters, private cars, Gojek, and Grab when traveling longer distances.

DOES BALI HAVE LYFT?

Lyft does not operate in Bali and likely never will. This is because there are other ridesharing apps, like Grab and Gojek, that are more popular and have been operating for riders for countless years already. It would be difficult for a new competitor like Lyft or Uber to come in and compete with these other apps.

UBER ALTERNATIVES IN BALI: GRAB & GOJEK

While Uber and Lyft do not operate in Bali or Indonesia, there are plenty of other popular ridesharing services you can opt for that the locals use on a daily basis. To learn more about each, read the descriptions below.

Gojek

Gojek was the first ridesharing app to dominate Bali's transportation industry back in 2010. When the company first started they only offered motorcycle ride-hailing services, but today they've expanded to provide quite a range of convenient services. Nowadays, Gojek offers not just motorcycle and car transport, but also food delivery (GoFood), courier services (GoSend), on-demand services such as house cleaning, massages, and car maintenance (GoLife), and even a mobile payment platform (GoPay). Gojek also offers a variety of discounts and promotions to attract new users and retain existing customers, so be on the look out for some good deals if you're going to use this app!

Grab

The ridesharing app Grab took transportation and other services in Bali by storm when it began operating back in 2016. It actually dominated the ride sharing industry in Southeast Asia so much that Uber decided to withdraw their services from Bali only two years after Grab became widely used. Today, Grab is used for transporting riders via car or scooter (you get to choose when booking), food delivery services, and even courier services. Similarly to Uber, they also display the pricing when you are booking the service which means that you can expect transparent, honest prices. Look out for their promotions as well because this app is known to give discounts!

What's Better: Grab or Gojek?

Both Grab and Gojek offer similar and competitive services, making it difficult to choose which one is better overall. In terms of transportation, Gojek is better for motorcycle taxis and Grab is better if you are looking to take a car from point A to point B. As far as food delivery goes, Gojek's GoFood service is well known among locals for is wider variety of Indonesian takeout options. However, at the end of the day both of these are outstanding options that offer many discounts and promotions, making them great regardless of what service you're getting. If I were you, I think the best way to choose would be to download both apps and compare which service was cheaper at the moment or who offers a better discount at that time, and go with that one.

THE MOST AFFORDABLE TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS IN BALI

Looking to see which transportation options are the most affordable ones in Bali? Take a look at the list below, which describes each transportation option in more detail. It is ordered from least expensive to most expensive!

Biking. It only costs $1-$3 to rent a bicycle to ride during the day in Bali. This is a great option for those looking to save a few dollars, get some exercise in, and enjoy the fresh air!

Bemo (public minivans). For only about $0.20 to $1 per ride, these minivans take riders on set routes across Bali. If you don't want to ride a bike, then this would be a good alternative at a similar cost.

Scooter rentals. This is an extremely popular choice among tourists and one I even opted for myself when visiting Bali. Generally costing anywhere from $2-$10 a day, this is such a fun way to get around Bali. Just make sure you're comfortable and confident riding the motorbike before you get onto Bali's busy streets! Gojek or Grab. These are two of the most popular ridesharing apps in the area. They are a cheaper alternative to traditional taxis, and great for anyone who is not comfortable riding a motorcycle or a bike around Bali.

Taxis. Taxis are a more expensive transportation option in Bali. Most taxis have a starting fare of around 7,000 to 10,000 Indonesian Rupiah (approximately $0.50 to $0.70) and then they charge 4,000 to 6,000 Rupiah per kilometer (or about $0.28 to $0.42 per mile).

Car rental. Renting a car gives you lots of freedom but is also more costly, with daily rates around $20-$40 not including fuel. To look more into your car rental options, click here.

Private driver. Hiring a private driver is the most expensive transportation option available.  It offers comfort and personal service but is one of the more expensive options, typically ranging from $30 to $60 per day. My friend group and I paid a local as our driver and we paid $60 a day for 6 of us and for our driver to drive us anywhere and everywhere. This meant we each spent $10 a person per day.

IS IT CHEAPER TO USE GRAB/GOJEK OR A SCOOTER RENTAL IN BALI?

Choosing between Grab/Gojek and renting a scooter depends on how often you plan on traveling and how comfortable you feel operating a motorbike. Grab and Gojek are great for occasional trips and offer the convenience of not worrying about driving, getting fuel, or parking, with rides typically costing just a few dollars each. On the other hand, scooter rentals, costing about $4 to $10 per day, can be a better financial option for anyone planning more extensive travel around the island. You just have to feel confident driving on the streets and through Bali traffic! All in all, a scooter is a cheaper and more flexible option but ridesharing apps like Grab and Gojek are better for convenience and anyone who doesn't feel comfortable renting and driving their own motorbike.
